FERCO GRANT WINNER 2001

FERCO is pleased to announce the winner of this year's Grant of $10,000.

TITLE: "Fishing, fish processing and trade at the endangered Mar Bravo Site, Southwest Ecuador."

INVESTIGATOR: Karen Stothert, Ph.D.(Principal Investigator, Center of Archaeological Research, University of Texas, San Antonio)

ABSTRACT: "A multi-disciplinary study of the endangered Mar Bravo site in coastal Ecuador will document for the first time the activities of people whose economic specialization within the Manteno-Guancavilca economic system was fishing and fish processing. Contextual information and other archaeological evidence (faunal, human and botanical remains, ceramics, lithic tools, metal objects, obsidian, and shell and bone artifacts) will be used to reconstruct the productive activities performed at the site, and to assess the participation of the people in maritime trade and their role and in the regional political system at the periphery of the Inca Empire."

SALVAGE OR RESCUE COMPONENT: The site is covered by twelve shrimp larva laboratories. New building construction will provide an opportunity to explore the site.
