Guidelines for the 2002 FERCO Grant Program for Research on Cultural Origins:

General: FERCO (Foundation for Exploration and Research on Cultural Origins) was initiated by Thor Heyerdahl with original funding from Fred Olsen and Piramides de Guimar on Tenerife, Canary Islands.

1. Proposals must be in English.

2. FERCO has a particular interest in supporting research on long-distance interaction in prehistory and on the ancient use of the world's oceans. This year's competition is limited to studies of interaction between socieites with very different cultures, histories, and beliefs. Proposals in the fields of prehistoric, Classical and Historic archaeology, ethnohistory, art history, and other relevant fields will be considered. Interdisciplinary research is strongly encouraged.

3. The competition is open to individual scholars with a proven record of scientific research, including those without institutional affiliation. Dissertation projects or other work toward an academic degree will not be considered.

4. FERCO will make two grants, each for a maximum of US $10,000.

5. Proposals should include the following:

a) An abstract, not to exceed 100 words.

b) A description of the proposed research, including: a statement of the problem to be addressed and its relevance to the program's goals for 2002; a summary of relevant prior research; theoretical approach to be employed; and a description of the field methodology and methods of analysis of the recovered data to be employed. (5 pp. single spaced maximum)

c) References cited.

d) A timetable for the project, listing all significant activities through completion of the final report.

e) A detailed budget, with explanation.

f) The curriculum vitae of the Principal Investigator (PI) and other senior project members.

6. Proposals will be reviewed by the members of the FERCO Scientific Committee, and may also be sent for anonymous review by outside authorities in relevant areas of study. However, FERCO will not provide evaluations of unsuccessful proposals. PIs are asked to submit the names and addresses of 3-5 possible reviewers.

7. If the proposed research is part of a larger project, the work to be funded by FERCO must constitute a discrete part of that project. If the FERCO portion of the project cannot be completed without additional funding from other sources, we will not provide the grant until the PI supplies us with evidence that such funds are in hand.

8. Funds will be administered by the PI's institution. FERCO will not pay institutional overhead or salaries. In the case of individual researchers, guidelines for the reporting of expenditures of funds will be developed on a case by case basis.

9. It is the responsibility of PIs to acquire all necessary research permits. The cover letter accompanying the proposal must indicate the status of research permits. If research cannot be completed due to lack of permits, FERCO will normally require all funds to be returned.

10. PIs should send 8 copies of the proposal to: Dan Sandweiss, Anthropology Dept., South Stevens Hall, University of Maine, Orono ME 04469-5773, USA. Proposals must be received by FEbruary 28, 2002.

11. At the end of the grant period, PIs of funded projects must submit a research summary and a detailed account of expenditures.

12. FERCO reserves the right to post information about funded projects, including research summaries, on the FERCO website and/or to include such information in a FERCO newsletter.
